Prayer for a Husband Who Has Left

Every married couple wants to stay together for all their lifetime. God intended for married couples to keep the marriage bond. The original purpose of marriage was union and companionship.

Being left behind by your husband is difficult. He has his reasons, and you are hurt and can be shaken, but God is also with you. He is there to comfort you and your husband. You can pray for your husband and find strength in the presence of God.

Dear Father God, You are great and compassionate. You work things out for our good. Please be with my husband. Speak to his mind and heart. Let him be enlightened and do what is right. Let him be ready to return to my family and me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do I deal with a husband who has left?

Your husband may have unresolved issues. You and your husband may have things you have not dealt with, but that does not keep you from treating him well. Here are ways for you to deal with your husband:

1. Be patient

Your husband’s leaving you can bring negative emotions. When he left you, you might have felt hurt and offended.

Paul wrote that Christians should be patient [Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2 (NIV) ]. As hard as it may be, be considerate of him. Be patient with him, thinking about how God has been and is being patient with you.

2. Forgive

You may feel some resentment or be tempted to hate your husband. You may also become bitter and have other ill feelings toward him.

The believers were instructed to forgive people [Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13 (NIV) ]. Choose to forgive your husband. As Jesus did for those who left his side when he was about to get crucified, choose to forgive. When you forgive, it will be easier for you and your husband to heal and move on.

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13 (NIV)

3. Do not blame him

When your spouse left you, there was a reason for him leaving. Whatever the reason, it will leave a hard and dark mark on your heart and mind.

Eve blamed the serpent, an act which was not pleasing to God [ Genesis 3:1-13 (NIV) ]. Do not blame your husband for leaving. There were instances that arose before he decided to leave. His decision to leave was thought out, even if his reason is not valid, and it was not an easy decision for him. Do not blame him; leave it all to God.

4. Do not judge

You and your husband may have irreconcilable differences that led to him leaving you. Leaving you may have been easy for him to do, but it is best not to judge him.

Jesus commanded the disciples not to judge others [ Matthew 7:1-2 (NIV) ]. Your husband has shortcomings and has made mistakes, just as you have. He loved you the best he could. But he is also wounded, as you are. Do not judge him for leaving you. Understand his feelings and what he is going through as well.

5. Do not cut off the communication

When your husband left, it may have become easy to cut off communication between the two of you because of negative emotions and thoughts.

The Bible teaches us to communicate with grace [Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:6 (NIV) Colossians 4:6 (NIV) ]. Whenever possible, keep communication lines open and have good conversations, especially if you have children. You may have unresolved issues, but your children need their father, and you need the partnership of your husband for the welfare of your children.

6. Wish him well

The enemy may tempt you to wish that something bad would happen to your husband or that he would live a miserable life after leaving you.

The Christians were asked to look for what would be beneficial to others [ not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:4 (NIV) ]. Think of good things to come to him. Wish him well in his emotional, physical, and mental health, as well as in his work and in what God has set for him to do.

What can I pray to God with a husband who has left?

Whenever you have concerns, you can come to God in prayer. You can pray to God considering these six points:

1. Pray for peace

You and your husband had troubling thoughts before he left you. You both may still have disturbing thoughts.

The believers were counseled about what the peace of God among them would do [And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 (NIV) ]. Pray for God to give you and your husband peace and to be at peace with each other. Ask God that both of you may have positive and calm thoughts. Pray for your hearts and minds to have restful peace.

2. Ask God for guidance

With your husband needing to leave and the thought that his leaving has hurt you, you and your husband need guidance from God.

God guides all the time. [ Isaiah 58:11 (NIV) ]. Pray for God to guide both of you. Ask God for direction for you and your husband to know and be led to do the good things God has planned for you. Request God to guide you as you bring up your children now that you are separated.

3. Request God for joy

One of the saddest things that can happen when a husband leaves is for joy to be stolen by the evil one.

God will give overwhelming joy [ May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NIV) ]. Ask God to restore joy to you and your husband, even if you are already separated from each other. Request God for your husband to find joy in the things he still has and for his future blessings.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NIV)

4. Beseech God for wisdom

Since your husband left you, you may rush into thinking and saying things that are not aligned with the leading of the Spirit and wisdom.

God bestows wisdom as described in (If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5 (NIV). God has given wisdom to you and your spouse. Ask God for you to use that wisdom in your thoughts, attitudes, conduct, and dealings with each other.

5. Pray for kindness

Life must have been tough and challenging for you and your husband when he left. Both of you may have difficulties that you are facing right now. He may have received some criticism for leaving you.

Christians are encouraged to be kind to people, even to those who they do not like [ Luke 6:35 (NIV) ]. Pray to God for others to be kind to you and your husband. Ask God for people to treat him well. Request God that other people will still appreciate, respect, and remember his goodness and thank him. Pray that you and your husband will still be kind to each other.

6. Ask God for a deeper faith

Being left behind by your husband may have weakened faith for both of you. You and your husband may have struggled with trusting and hoping in the Lord. The enemy may tempt you both to lose your confidence and doubt the love and goodness of God.

David, about to get killed, was down, but God strengthened his faith [ 1 Samuel 30:6 (NIV) ]. In the same way, when you have a heavy burden, pray for God to strengthen your faith and your husband’s. Ask God for both of you to hold on to the faithfulness and grace of God. Pray that you will be strong enough to release him and move on.

Giving time to pray for your husband is important. You can pray to God with the prayer below. You can also add words as the Holy Spirit inspires you. Here is the prayer:

My heavenly Father,

You are great and gracious to us. You know everything that is happening in our relationships. My situation with my husband is not hidden from you. You know every detail; the thoughts and emotions we have for each other. Father, it pains me that my husband has left me. You know what is in my heart, and You know completely what is in his mind. Grant enlightenment to my husband. Help him think of what is good, proper, right, and beneficial for himself, me, and our children. Let him examine his ways and reflect on the things that matter. Give him the wisdom to do the right thing. Guide and lead him toward Your will for him. Bless him with peace and understanding. Strengthen his faith. Let him hope in You. Let him see the need for him to be on good terms with me. Please work in his heart and let him be sensitive to the moving of the Spirit. I pray these things in the mighty name of Jesus, Who unites. Amen.
