Prayer for an Unbelieving Husband

Salvation comes to a person only when he believes in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Unless a man accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior, he will remain unsaved from eternal damnation (John 3:18). If your husband is an unbeliever, never lose hope! Here is a Prayer for an Unbelieving Husband:

Abba Father, I pray for my husband today. Lord, touch his heart and break his unbelief, in Jesus’ Name! Open his heart to the Word of truth that he may accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Let salvation come into his life today. I believe that You are doing something, Lord. Amen. 

What the Bible says about an unbelieving husband

Living with someone who doesn’t believe in Jesus Christ is challenging. Sometimes arguments are inevitable because of opposing beliefs and values. But the Lord doesn’t encourage you to separate from your unbelieving husband. The Lord sees your marriage as an opportunity to introduce him to the Savior. Here are a few things the Bible says about unbelieving husbands:

A believing wife sanctifies her unbelieving husband (1 Cor. 7:14-16)

Because of your faith in the Lord, your unbelieving husband is sanctified by the Lord. Sanctification means that he is declared holy. Thus, instead of tasting God’s wrath, he also receives the favor God is pouring out on your life. Also, the Lord sees your children as holy people; because you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, He will bless your family. 

However, if your unbelieving husband chooses to leave you, let him depart. The Lord values your peace. You should not persuade your husband to stay if he wants to go. It is painful, but you can rest on God’s everlasting love for you (Jer. 31:3).

If your husband stays with you, hold on to your marriage. You may fight quite often, but God may also use your life to save your husband. Keep loving your spouse and show him the grace that the Lord is giving you. Soon, he will receive Jesus Christ as his Savior. 

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Cor. 6:14)

The Scriptures discourage unmarried Christian women from marrying unbelievers because unbelievers have different standards compared to Christians. They don’t fear the Lord, and they don’t care about Him. Unless you conform with him or he conforms with you, there will never be an agreement. And you know in your heart that the Lord never wants you to conform to the patterns of the world (Rom. 12:2).

But if you are already bound by marriage,  you must stand in your faith. Never waive your faith in God no matter what happens. There will be pressures, but hold on to God until your husband becomes a believer. 

How do I pray for my husband’s salvation?

As much as possible, never argue with your husband to persuade him to receive Jesus Christ. Debates and arguments are not the ways of the Lord. Go to your prayer room and ask God to change your husband’s heart. Break the bondages and chains that prevent him from believing. Here are some prayers for your husband’s salvation:

Prayer against unbelief – 

Unbelief is a result of spiritual blindness. Your husband may be holding on to a lie, thinking it is the truth. He may come from a religion that rejects Jesus Christ or has atheistic principles. A spiritually blind person cannot see the truth no matter how many times you explain it. Shatter the spiritual blindness and break the unbelief through this prayer:

Heavenly Father, I pray for my husband. Remove the scales from his eyes so he can see the truth. I renounce the spiritual blindness and the unbelief in his heart! I break the lies and principles contrary to the Word of God! Let his heart receive the Gospel and see that only Jesus can bring salvation into his life. Amen. 

Prayer against pride – Prayer for an Unbelieving Husband

Another reason that your husband keeps on rejecting Jesus is pride. He may think that he doesn’t need Jesus in his life. Or he cannot accept that what you say about the Lord is true. Only when he humbles himself can he accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Break the spirit of pride through this prayer:

Almighty God, You can see the heart of my husband. But I believe You can change it because nothing is impossible with You (Luke 1:37). I break the spirit of pride, in Jesus’ Name! I declare humility so he may accept the salvation that comes from You. For this, I pray, Amen. 

Prayer against callousness

A callous heart cannot receive the Word of God. Once the heart hardens, it cannot accept God’s Word. This is usually caused by pride, unrepented sins, and disobedience. But no matter how calloused the heart is, the Lord can transform it. Below is a prayer against callousness:

Dear Lord, I pray against the callousness of my husband’s heart. Replace his heart of stone with a heart of flesh (Ez. 36:26). Touch his heart so Your love may flow within him. You are his only Hope, Lord. I cast out the pride and disobedience in his life, in Jesus’ Name! I break the bondage of sins, and I declare freedom. Amen. 

Prayer for salvation – Prayer for an Unbelieving Husband

Once your husband’s heart is cleared, you can now pray for his salvation. It is an everyday prayer that you must utter for your husband. Since we don’t know how long or short our life is, we must plead to God for the salvation of our loved ones. Here is a prayer for salvation:

Father in heaven, I ask for my husband’s salvation today. Give him a humble heart that is receptive to Your Word. Speak to him and let Your loving presence touch his life today. Forgive him for all his sins, and have mercy on his soul. Let salvation come to his life today. Thank You, Lord. Amen. 

What does “unequally yoked” mean? 

“Yoked” is a term used in farming. Two similar animals are yoked to plow a field. However, putting in an ox and a donkey is a mismatch, creating trouble for the union. If you are a believer, you should not marry an unbeliever (2 Cor. 6:14). The kingdom of God cannot unite with the kingdom of darkness. There are no in-betweens! What is of God is of God and what is of the world is of the world (1 John 2:15). The Scriptures discourage us from compromising our beliefs to please the world. 

You should not conform to your husband’s lifestyle even though you are married (Rom. 12:2). Instead of being defeated by the kingdom of darkness, bring the kingdom of God inside your home! Your husband may mock or insult you, but keep praying to God. Keep on praising and worshipping His Name. As you stand on the Word of God,  the Lord is also moving in your husband’s life. 

If you are unmarried, choose a man who believes in God. Save yourself from the arguments, mockery, and persecution within the marriage. There may be some eligible men courting you but wait for the man God destined for you. Waiting for God is always the best approach (Ecc. 3:11). 

Your unbelieving husband is not your enemy. God loves him as He loves you. Instead of pushing him away, show your spouse the love of Christ. And love is not about pleasing people but standing for what is righteous and true. As you pray for your husband, firmly believe that salvation is about to come to him.
