The Purpose of Marriage According to God

Reflecting God’s image

Christian wives have an amazing opportunity to bring honor and glory to God through their marriages. Through the sacrament of holy matrimony, spouses are able to reflect the perfect love shared between Jesus and His Church.

This reflection is strengthened when couples commit themselves to pursuing true agape love, defined as unconditional respect based on honor for each other’s unique gifts and personality traits.

Marriage according to Scripture should be founded upon three principles: trust in God’s plan for marriage, unselfish devotion and sacrifice between husband and wife, and a commitment that honors biblical principles and values.

Becoming saints

Becoming a saint is no small feat. It’s up to each spouse to do their part—to strive for holiness, live a life free from sin, and put God first in all facets of life. Christian couples can begin embracing this by practicing the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,).

Additionally, it’s vital that couples don’t neglect Bible study as they strive for spiritual growth. Marriage can be used as an opportunity for both parties to better understand who God is as they work hard each day toward their transformation into saints. Ultimately, investing effort into spiritual maturity will result in a marriage closer knit with Him where both partners grow together as they understand His love more deeply each day.

Maintaining a Godly Perspective in Marriage

The purpose of marriage is to become closer to God and each other. To do just that, it is important to consider the unconditional love and sacrifice Christ gives us when developing a healthy, godly perspective on marriage.

Through understanding true love and working towards sanctifying our marriages, we can both prioritize and cherish our spouses as a reflection of Christ’s great love for us all.

Unconditional love and sacrifice

As Christians, we are called to love and serve one another sacrificially; this stands true for our marriage as well. Unconditional love and sacrifice in a Christian marriage mean choosing to put Jesus at the center of our union, allowing ourselves to be poured out without condition or expectation. This kind of open-heartedness provides an opportunity for both parties to grow closer to God and experience deepened transformation into His image. When we embrace unconditional love and sacrifice in our marriages, we can better reflect Christ’s perfect example of agape—selfless giving of oneself—to each other.

But it’s easier said than done. Pursuing holiness through sacrificial acts requires courage because selflessness goes against all natural inclinations we have as humans. But when we sacrifice our own comfort and ease to live out a deeper understanding of unconditional love, we take a big step in our transformation into saints. These sacrifices are the kind of immense love Christ showed us (John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.).

How to Embrace God’s Plan for Your Christian Marriage

An understanding of God’s plan for marriage is key to embracing it and living a Christ-centered life as husband and wife. With this knowledge, let’s discover some real-life tools and guidance that will help you create the holy union God desires from you.

Understanding true love

In a Christian marriage, understanding true love is essential and can help foster a strong bond between spouses while strengthening their relationship with God. True love requires an unconditional commitment in which each spouse sacrifices for the good of the other regardless of hardship. This sometimes means embracing difficulties and pain, like Jesus did when He took up the cross. We must strive to sacrifice for one another out of commitment to Jesus’ teachings; after all, Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice to bring us closer to God.

When faced with distress or difficulty, it can be tough to remain focused on simply loving your husband or wife unconditionally. It’s a challenge to remain faithful without expecting anything in return or recognition for being a good spouse.

But when both spouses learn how to devote themselves unconditionally as Christ did, they will not only see improvement in their own Christian faith but also in the bond that unites them as married Christians walking together toward Heaven.

To further cultivate this kind of sacrificial true love, regularly devoting time to simply exchanging words of comfort and encouragement can be hugely beneficial for couples. We see a beautiful example of this in Ruth 1:16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:.

Working towards sanctification

In a Christian marriage, both spouses must work together to become holy and sanctified. By striving for holiness through their relationship, they reflect the image of God in one another, which is a great blessing from the Lord.

It’s important to ensure that each partner is pursuing this spiritual maturity individually and as part of the couple. Marriage can be an incredible tool for looking closer at our weaknesses so we can grow out of them with our partner’s help as we mature in our spirituality.

This means learning to deal with difficult situations or stubborn differences with patience and understanding, just like Jesus did in His ministry on Earth. Working toward sanctification also involves prayerfully carving out time together devoted exclusively to growing spiritually as a couple, as we mentioned earlier. Bible study for couples is particularly helpful here when done regularly. Participating in acts of service within and outside of your own community as a unit are other powerful ways to accomplish personal growth and meaningful actions that have concrete results.

Prioritizing and cherishing your partner

To reach the goal of a fulfilling Christian marriage, prioritizing and cherishing your partner is essential. As we saw in Genesis 1, God created man out of His own image. We can fulfill this likeness to God by honoring, respecting, and sacrificing for our spouses. When we do so, we walk God’s ordained path in marriage. His divine love is reflected when we strive for a biblical union.

In Mark 10:8–9, Jesus tells us how marriage joins spouses physically. But when we prioritize and cherish our spouses, we achieve true oneness as husband and wife and become joined spiritually as well. In essence, we should always strive to embody continuous, unconditional devotion and submission to our spouses. Husbands should love their wives, and wives should cherish their husbands according to 1 Corinthians 13.

Conclusion

The sanctity of Christian marriage is established by God; it is a powerful and beautiful reflection of His love. Marriage unites two people into one, reminding us that nothing is impossible if we rely on Him as the center of our relationship.

By embracing God’s plan for your Christian marriage, you can become holy through selflessness, commitment, and perseverance. Unconditional love and sacrifice will guide you and your spouse to a stronger marriage while also deepening both of your relationships with God.

Through understanding true love, working towards mutual sanctification, and prioritizing each other in Christ-like ways, we can experience all that life has to offer together in a loving union—just as God originally intended when He first created man and woman!
