How can I bless my husband in the new year?

As a wife, God has enabled and equipped you to be a better wife to your husband. Believe and be confident that you are empowered to bless your husband in the new year ahead. You can do so by doing the following:

  • Give him time to rest

Like any husband, your husband needs time to rest after all his work at his workplace and at home. We have read Jesus’ invitation to give rest to those who are tired in the book of Matthew 11:28 (NIV) (Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.). As a follower of Jesus, you need to follow His ways and give rest to your husband. Refrain from telling him your complaints, negative thoughts, or bad news. Give him time to rest in the Lord.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  • Make him happy

Happiness is one of the most precious gifts of God to man. We read the command of Jesus in  Mark 12:31 (NIV) (The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”), telling people to love others, and part of loving others is making them happy. Make your husband happy by doing him favors, joining him in his hobbies or interests, doing chores for him, and any other thing you may think of. You can also make him significantly happier by being proud of him in the presence of your children and other loved ones.

  • Pray for him

One of the most effective ways to bless your husband is by praying for him. The Bible teaches about praying for others at all times in Ephesians 6:18 (NIV) (praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints), which includes praying for your husband. When you pray for your spouse, you are asking God to bless him with his needs and sometimes even his other desires. Take time to pray with him as well.

  • Appreciate him

Your husband will be delighted if you express your appreciation for him. The apostle Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV) (give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.) that we should give thanks always, and part of this is showing appreciation to your spouse. Be grateful for his love, care, work, and support for you and your children. You may write him a letter or send him messages of your appreciation and thanks.

  • Love him

The biggest blessing you can give your husband in the new year is loving him unconditionally. In 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV) (Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.), the apostle Peter taught the believers to love one another on a deeper level. Love your spouse more than you have loved him the past year. Show how much you care for him. Accept him fully, despite his flaws. Love him in his love language.

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

  • Forgive him

All husbands make mistakes. Just as God has been considerate and understanding of your mistakes, you should do the same for your husband. The author of Ephesians 4:32 (NIV) urged believers to be forgiving to others. Forgive your husband, for God has forgiven you and will continue to forgive you. Forgive your husband whenever he slips, for when you forgive him, you strengthen your marriage.

  • Be patient with him

Patience is one of the most important ingredients for a successful marriage. In the book of Ephesians 4:2 (NIV), the Bible reminds us to be patient and forbearing with one another. Remember that your husband is not perfect. He may do or not do things that will test your patience. He may displease you by not meeting your expectations. With that in mind, be patient because when you are, your husband will see more of your love for him and be grateful.

  • Encourage him

Part of your role as a wife is to encourage your husband. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV) is a good reminder that we should encourage each other. You can encourage your spouse as well. You may encourage him by showing your support for him and giving him words of encouragement. You can also encourage him by playing uplifting songs, singing Christian songs for him, and reading the Bible with him, among other things.

  • Respect him

Respect is essential in marriage, and your husband needs your respect. When you respect your spouse, you make him feel important. Ephesians 5:33 (NIV) directs a wife to respect her husband. When you respect your spouse, he will think that he is highly valued and truly loved. You can respect him more by listening to what he says and, more importantly, what he does not say. Respect his desires, dreams, choices, and decisions.

How can my husband and I start the year right with God?

God is the God of beginnings and fresh starts. He gives new things, new days, and a new year. You and your husband will be blessed by God’s gifts in the coming new year. As the new year unfolds, you can start the year right with God by getting into these seven things:

1. Praying together

One of the first things you can do at the start of the year is to come to God in prayer together with your husband. In the book of Matthew 18:19-20 (NIV), Jesus explains that when Christians agree on their petitions in prayer, He is present with them. Ask him for forgiveness for your mistakes. Thank him for his faithfulness and grace over the past year. Present him with any requests you may have.

2. Worshiping together

Begin the year by worshiping God. We read in the book of Psalm 95:6 (NIV) where the author encourages the people to worship together. Sing songs of praise to him. Make good music for the Lord. You can use musical instruments to offer your praises to God. Be thankful for everything He has given you and the unexpected blessings for you, your husband, and your marriage.

3. Forgetting the past

God creates everything new. He wants to give you and your husband a new start in this new year. In Philippians 3:13 (NIV), the apostle Paul encouraged the early believers to forget the past, something that he did himself. Though you may have had pain and regret in the past, it is God’s will for you to forget them and move forward because thinking about the past will not be good for you and your spouse.

4. Trusting in God

The start of a new year brings about a number of uncertainties. However, God is in control of everything that will happen in the new year. God always keeps his promises and has proven countless times how faithful He is. It is written in Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) that we should trust in the Lord with our whole hearts. You can trust in Him and in what He can do. You can trust him completely because He is your father, and He loves you.

5. Seeking wisdom

Before you do a certain thing with your husband, the right thing to do is to seek God’s wisdom because his wisdom is perfect. You can find in James 1:5 (NIV) that you simply have to ask God for wisdom, and He will give it to you. Follow His guidance, for He will constantly lead you to better and greater heights. His way is the true and certain way to ensure that you and your husband have an abundant life.

6. Committing your work to the Lord

God is constant in his commitment to you and your husband. The Bible says in Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) that we should commit our deeds to God. With that in mind, make plans according to the will of God and commit whatever you do to God. Dedicate and offer him your work. Both of you should devote your time and effort to God.

7. Hoping in the Lord

While the thought of having a fresh start for the new year is promising, the enemy may plant some worrisome thoughts in you and your husband. You can see in Romans 12:12 (NIV) that the writer encourages us to be hopeful. You and your husband can start your new year right with God in the hope that He will bless and sustain you, just as he has in the past. Both of you should hope for goodness, growth, and prosperity.

Conclusion

Thinking about the new year brings a different kind of joy and certain expectations. Add hope and optimism to your prayer by knowing that God will bless you and your husband, not just physically but also emotionally and spiritually because God is a loving and generous giver.
