How Can I Help My Husband Get Closer To God?

Intimacy is essential in every relationship. The same is true for our relationship with God. We must get closer to him every day so that we may grow in grace and in our knowledge of Him (2 Pet. 3:18). Only when we truly know God can we put our trust in him and live a surrendered life. If your husband is missing out on God’s presence because of a lack of intimacy, help him with this prayer:

1. Share the Word of God

By delving deeper into God’s Word, we will know how much He loves us. However, we will only discover how deeply we are loved if we understand what Jesus did for us on the Cross. He demonstrated His love for us by giving us His life, even though we were still sinners (Rom. 5:8). If your husband doesn’t read the Bible, you can share God’s Word to encourage him to know Him more.

2. Be a living epistle

If your spouse doesn’t read the Bible, you should be a living epistle (2 Cor. 3:2) for them. We are called to be the light and salt of the earth, showing the goodness of God toward others. Instead of forcing your husband to change, show him how God transforms you every day. Treating him with love and grace can encourage him to get closer to God. 

3. Invite your husband to have fellowship with you and other believers

One thing that hinders us from getting closer to God is guilt. Whenever we sin, we feel unclean and unworthy to approach the Lord. However, we must understand that God had already forgiven us since the moment Jesus Christ laid down His life on the Cross (Eph. 1:7). Ask the Lord for your spouse to receive God’s forgiveness by accepting Jesus as his Savior:

If we want to get closer to God, we must have a humble heart and accept that without Him, we are nothing (John 15:5). Like a child who is dependent on their parents, we must approach our Heavenly Father in the same way. He will gladly accept and comfort us, even in our weaknesses and imperfections. Heavenly Father, grant my husband a humble heart. Help him realize that without You, we are nothing. Give him a heart that is dependent and surrendered to You alone. Prayer against self-righteousness

Self-righteousness prevents us from getting closer to God. Instead of depending on Him alone, it drives us to rely on ourselves and our own righteousness. Our intimacy with God cannot be earned by our good deeds but by receiving His grace and love for us (Eph. 2:8-9). Below is a prayer that can help your husband if he is struggling with self-righteousness:

Father in heaven, we cannot do anything to earn Your favor. It is because of Your grace that we have been saved. Reveal to my husband the finished work of Jesus so that he may accept that His righteousness saved us, not our own. I renounce the pride in his heart, in Jesus’ name!
