Prayer for a Discouraged Husband

God has created magnificent beauty and perfection all around us. He made man in his wonderful image, just as it is described in the Bible. Man pursues greatness and excellence, but man is not perfect. His ways are always limited.

A husband, awesome though he may be, is not flawless. He dreams of good things, but he is not spared from discouragement. Discouragement can be disheartening, but God has provided a way out of it. God has given husbands their wives to help those men pray when they get discouraged.

Wife’s Prayer for a Discouraged Husband

Praying for your husband is one of the most powerful tools you have to help him overcome his discouragement and let his light shine brightly again. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you bring your husband closer to God in prayer:

Prayer for a Discouraged Husband

Prayer for a Discouraged Husband

  • Pray for him to remember who he is

When a person is discouraged, his mind is usually fixed on that discouragement. Your husband may only be thinking of the negative circumstances that have been brought about by that discouragement. There may be a tendency to forget his true identity. He may forget that he is a child of God. He may not remember that he came from God or that God chose him.

Pray that your husband will remember that he is a child of God, as it is written in [ John 1:12 (NIV) ]. Ask God for your spouse to remember that he is loved by God, despite his shortcomings, mistakes, or whatever has specifically caused his discouragement. Ask God to remind your husband that he has the ability to overcome discouragement.

  • Ask God for awareness

Your husband may not be sensitive to the Spirit when he is feeling discouraged. He may not see that God is beside him in his situation. Your husband may not remember who is carrying him.

Pray that your husband will become aware of the presence of God, even when he is discouraged, for God has said that he is with man [ Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) ]. Ask God to open your spouse’s eyes so that he may see that God is always with him, even in his discouragement.

  • Pray that he will be wiser

Discouragement may lessen the wisdom of your husband. He may act emotionally or make decisions based on impulse or a sudden flash of thought. He can react without careful consideration.

Request that God enlighten your husband so he can be discerning and listen to advise, as said in [ Proverbs 19:20 (NIV) ]. Pray for God to bless your husband with wisdom that will lead him to do what is right. Ask God to guide your spouse to the best decisions aligned with his will and word.

  • Ask God for your husband to be motivated

The discouragement of your husband may result in him losing motivation. He may not be inspired or driven to do better things. He may not be as interested in pursuing his goals and doing certain things he used to enjoy.

Being motivated is vital for him to accomplish his goals. Pray for him to be motivated by the Holy Spirit. Pray that the Spirit will move him to do good, just as the apostle Paul mentioned in [ 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV) ]. Ask God to enlighten and inspire your husband to continue doing his work.

  • Petition God for him to be grateful

Having a heart of gratitude is essential for your husband to recover. However, his gratitude may be affected by his discouragement. He can lose the joy of being so privileged in life. He may forget how much we has and how God has blessed him throughout his life.

Remind your husband about his blessings. The psalmist in the Bible says to thank God for what he has done [ Psalm 9:1 (NIV) ]. Ask God to remind your husband of all the blessings that he has received. Request that God refresh your spouse with his goodness, mercy and grace.

  • Implore God for your spouse to increase in his faith

Discouragement may cause your husband to doubt things. He may be inclined to doubt his abilities and lose confidence in what God can do for his life. He may lose his confidence. Thus, his faith may grow weak.

Pray for God to increase the faith of your husband in his situation. Jesus taught that everything can be done if there is faith [ Matthew 17:20 (NIV) ]. Jesus also instructed his disciples to simply ask, and it would be given to them [ Matthew 7:7 (NIV) ]. Therefore, ask God to strengthen and embolden your spouse’s faith so that he may overcome discouragement and move towards a life of assurance and deeper faith.

  • Ask God for him to be hopeful

Given the status of your husband, he may get hopeless. He may forget the promises of God in his life. Your spouse may even think of giving up.

Pray for your husband to remember and hold on to the promises of God. There is hope in God, as said in [ Romans 15:13 (NIV) ]. Ask God for your husband to be hopeful and to remember that God has prepared better days for him. Pray for your spouse to be optimistic.

  • Request comfort from God

Discomfort can be caused by discouragement. Your husband may experience discomfort and succumb to unpleasant feelings and disappointing thoughts.

Pray for his discomfort to pass. Jesus gave comfort to his disciples by giving them peace [ John 16:33 (NIV) ]. Ask God to comfort your husband. Pray for God to allow your husband to rest in the love of God. Petition God for your husband to feel God’s compassion, mercy, and grace.

  • Beseech God for your husband to be encouraged

In his discouragement, your husband may lose courage. He may forget that he is bold. The enemy may steal his bravery, and he may become blind to his strength or see himself as incapable of doing better things.

Pray for God to make your spouse strong. David said that when he went to God, God delivered him from his fears [ Psalm 34:4-5 (NIV) ]. Beseech God to deliver and encourage your husband. Ask God to make your husband brave enough to face and conquer his present situation. Implore God to empower your husband so that he can be victorious.

Praying for your husband is not hard. Pour out your heart to God in prayer, for he is always listening, and he will answer. You may pray like this:

My Heavenly Father,

You are compassionate and comforting. Your love is great and you are always faithful. Thank you for blessing me with such a good husband. Thank you for providing for all our needs and for being with us always. Thank you for accepting us as your beloved children.

I come before you because you are our great God and loving father. You know what my husband is going through, so I put his situation into your hands. I believe and I rely on what you can do for him. Please comfort and strengthen him. Make him wiser, more grateful, and let him remember who he is. Let him cling to your promises. Let him be courageous once again.

Just as you have been faithful to people long ago, I depend on you and wait for your gracious hands to embrace and empower my husband. I pray all these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.
