How To for An Army Husband

All husbands have their own roles to play. Your husband’s job is special and simultaneously requires focus, physical strength, training, and discipline. As the wife of a man in the army, you have the responsibility not just to pray for his spiritual needs but also to petition God for his emotional needs and physical protection.

Here is a prayer you can say for the benefit of your husband:

Abba Father,

You are our loving Father and King of the Kings. Thank you for giving me such a good husband. Thank you for blessing my husband with a good job. Please bless him as he performs his tasks. Grant him wisdom, strength, and protection. I pray all these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.

What does the Bible say about praying for a husband?

Praying for your husband is essential. While it is of high importance, praying specifically for your husband is not mentioned in the Bible. What the Bible does teach, however, is praying for people in general, which indirectly includes praying for husbands. 

Paul says it in the book of Colossians [1:9 (NIV)] that they prayed for the Christians unceasingly. The same thing applies when praying for your husband. You can pray for anything that will benefit your spouse. 

In James 5:16, the Bible tells us to also pray for one another, which leads to healing. Healing is needed almost every day. Your husband may be hurt physically, but he can also be hurt emotionally by being wounded, insulted, or being a victim of shame or rudeness. Hence, he needs your constant prayers. Furthermore, the author explains that prayers are powerful. Thus, your prayers bring about the power of God in the life of your husband. Prayer moves the hand of God for the good of your husband.

It is written in 1 John 5:14-15  (NIV) that if we pray for something that is aligned with the will of God, God will give it to us. This is carried on in your prayers to your husband. The Lord will give you what you have asked of him for your husband, so long as God wills for the life of your husband. 

How do I pray for my husband?

In Matthew 6:9–13 (NIV), Jesus taught his disciples how to pray. He actually gave them a pattern for how to pray. God wants us to pray the same way, but he also understands when we fall short of the example of Jesus. You can pray for your husband in the way he guides and leads you. You may pray with these nine points in mind. Pray for:

1. His health

The health of your husband is of great importance. He needs good health so he can be with you and your children. In addition, he needs to be healthy in order to do other things in his life. The Bible tells us that God will give us good health [ Jeremiah 30:17 (NIV) ]. That is why we should go to him in prayer. Pray for your spouse to enjoy good physical and mental health. Pray for strength, healing, and rest. When he is not feeling well, do what you can to care for him and help him get in good shape once again. Pray with confidence that God will grant good health to your husband. Pray with the faith that God will do it. You may pray in this way:

Dear Father God,

You are great. Thank you for caring for us. Thank you for giving us bodies that we may move, enjoy life, and do things you want us to do. Please bless my husband with better health. Please strengthen his body so that he may be able to work effectively. I pray this, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2. His job

Your husband’s job is significant as well. Pray for him to fulfill his work responsibilities and duties. Scripture [Genesis 2:15 (NIV)] states that God has placed man to work. Pray that your spouse will work gladly and with excellence. Ask God to bless the hands and mind of your husband as he does his tasks and collaborates with his coworkers. Pray with hope in the Lord that he will bless your husband with career or business success. You can use this prayer:

Dear Lord God,

You are the giver of good gifts. Thank you for blessing my husband with work that matters to him. Please bless his job so that he may always be glad to do his work. Let him be efficient and shine in all his endeavors. These things I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. 

3. Healing from his past

It is written in the book of Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)  that the apostle Paul encouraged Christians to forget the past and move on. The past certainly does not have anything to do with the future. Pray with courage for your husband to learn from the past, forgive others or himself, and move forward, hoping for a better today and tomorrow with the Lord, who is our hope. You may pray this way:

Dear God,

You make all things new. Thank you for allowing us to start anew. We can break free from the negative past through you. Please let my husband learn from his past. Let him move on and find hope in you. May he be like the apostle Paul, who made efforts for the future. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

4. Courage

Just like anyone else, your husband needs to be courageous. Every day requires courage. Satan wants to stop your husband from doing what God has called him to do, so he puts fearful situations in his way. One of the bravest men in the Bible, David, wrote in Psalm 23:4 (NIV) that he is not afraid because God is present with him. Ask God with a longing heart to give your husband courage like that of David, who faced and killed Goliath. Pray for your husband to face and overcome his fears with the courage that God gives. You can say this prayer:

Dear Almighty God,

You are the God who gives courage. Please make my husband brave like David, who defeated Goliath. Please let my husband overcome his fears and be bold in all things. I pray this, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

5. His role as a family leader – Proverbs 9:9

God has appointed your husband to lead your family. He has also been anointed to co-manage your family. Pray for him to be a good husband. Ask God for him to be a role model for your children and a loving father. In Proverbs 9:9 (NIV), we read what Solomon has said, that with instruction we become wiser. Ask God to bless your husband with wisdom so that he may lead your family to a better life and greater godliness. You may pray this way:

Dear Heavenly Father,

You are our everlasting Father. Thank you for always being with us. Please bless my husband as he leads our family toward you, toward your plans and goals for us. Equip him with the wisdom he needs to be an effective family leader. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

6. His relationships

Just as you have many relationships, so does your husband. It is written in Ephesians 4:32 (NIV) that we should be good to others. Ask God for your spouse to be kind to others. Pray for your husband to treat others with respect, gentleness, and consideration. Request for your spouse to be patient and forgiving with others. Pray with great expectation for your husband to treasure his relationships and treat everyone with love and care. You may offer your prayer in this way:

Dear Lord God,

You have blessed us with relationships. You have given excellent relationships to my husband. Help him value the people you have placed in his life. Let him be patient and forgiving with others. These things I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

7. Peace

The enemy’s ways are geared towards disturbing your husband’s peace. He will do everything he can to disturb your spouse’s peace. He will use dark situations to bring trouble to your husband’s heart and mind. In John 14:27 (NIV), the Lord Jesus taught that he will give peace to people. Ask God for your husband to be at peace with himself, with God, and with others. Pray with a humble and yielding heart for your husband to fix his eyes on God’s power, goodness, grace, and will. Request for your spouse to be protected by God against the arrows of the evil one. You may voice your prayer like this:

Dear God Almighty,

We are so blessed because you give us such peace. Regarding my husband’s work, please constantly give him peace and security. When vexations come to him, please deliver him and grant him the peace that he needs. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

8. Joy

With all the pressures and disappointments in life, your husband may lose his joy. He may make mistakes and feel sad. He may be discouraged by the actions of other people. The enemy can steal his joy due to the circumstances that befall him. Ask God for your husband to see the joy of Jesus. We read in the Bible in the book of James 1:2-4 (NIV) that the author encourages Christians to be joyful, despite having problems. Pray with a positive attitude for your spouse to remember that sometimes things do happen that may cause sadness, but those things are temporary, and God will eventually make him joyful again. You can say this prayer:

Dear God,

You are the God of all joy. Thank you for making us glad. Please bless my husband with a joyful heart. When he faces sadness or low moments, cause him to rejoice, just like the apostle Paul, who was imprisoned but still rejoiced. I pray all of this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

9. Love for God

Your husband is blessed by God, who loves him dearly. It is written in Matthew 22:37 (NIV) that we should love God above all. We should love God more than we love others or things. Pray with a deep desire for your husband to love God first, as it is the greatest command spoken by Jesus. When your husband prioritizes God by obeying and loving him, he will be secure and safe in the hands of God. He will be able to love you and others more if he loves God first. He will grow in humility and become mature in his walk with God and dealings in other matters. You can get closer to God by praying this prayer:

Dear Loving God,

Your love overflows in us. Thank you for loving us unconditionally. Please bless my husband with the heart, mind, soul, and strength to love you the way you should be loved. Let him show his love for you with his obedience and devotion. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
