One of the key elements that will keep a married couple together effectively is prayer. When a couple prays together, they come together in unity, and their unity brings them closer to God and each other.

There are many things that a couple can pray for together. They can come to God and pray for their health. They can seek God’s blessing for their relationship and request that God help them grow and become stronger as individuals and as a couple.

A couple can pray for several things for their relationship and their lives. However, there are some prayer items that are more important than others. Here are seven points that a couple can pray for together:

• Love 

Most couples want their marriage to last a lifetime. A husband and wife want to be loved unconditionally and selflessly. You may know couples who are enjoying and cherishing the love that they have. God authored marriage to be a relationship that would extend His love to a husband and wife. 

The most important component of marriage is love. Having love binds the husband and wife in a lifelong relationship. [ “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34 (NIV) ], Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another the way He loved them. A husband and wife should pray to love each other with honesty and kindness. Couples need to ask God for them to be respectful, yielding, cooperative, and helpful. A husband and wife should ask God to make them kind, considerate, thoughtful, understanding, and willing to forgive. A husband and wife should love according to their love language. 

• Joy

Joy is one of the greatest blessings from God to man. Joy must be present in a marriage. When a couple is happy with each other, their marriage becomes stronger. With the joy that comes from God, a couple learns to see life and their relationship in a good light. A happy couple becomes more appreciative of what they have. Their joy leads them to be grateful, as God intended them to be.

God wants a couple to enjoy the days and years that they have with their partner. The Bible teaches us to rejoice in the Lord [ Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. Psalm 47:1 (NIV) ]. A husband and wife should pray to be joyful. Couples should ask God for moments of happiness. A couple should petition God to fill their hearts with gladness. Husbands and wives should ask God to make them joyful even in times of hardship or challenge.

• Peace

Peace is one of the most precious gifts that God, the giver of all things, gives to man and to a couple as well. When there is peace in the minds of a husband and his wife, there is harmony in their relationship. Peace opens the door to a more beautiful and sweeter relationship. It ushers a couple into the magnificent presence and glory of God.

There is true peace when a couple humbly submits to God’s will. In [Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. [ John 14:27 (NIV) ], Jesus talked about the unique peace that He gives to his disciples. A couple should pray to be at peace with God. A husband and his wife should also pray for peace to reign in their relationship.

• Patience

Another essential ingredient for a strong marital relationship is patience. When at least one spouse is patient, his or her patience will somehow keep the marriage from falling apart. Just as God has been faithfully patient with us and our relationship with Him has remained intact, so it will be for a husband and wife who are patient with each other.

Patience directly results from a couple’s genuine love for each other. Patience is a fruit of the Holy Spirit that God bestows on his children, including married couples. [Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. ( Ephesians 4:2 (NIV) ] shares with us the message of Paul to the Christians to be patient with one another. It is right for a husband and his wife to pray for patience with each other. Ask God for your patience to grow so that His will in your marriage will happen.

• Wisdom

For a marriage to work, wisdom is needed for both the husband and the wife. True wisdom can come only from God. True wisdom does not come instantly—it comes from developing a strong relationship with God through prayers, Bible readings, and meditations. The wisdom that God gives is a product of humility, submission, and obedience to the will of God.

The wisdom that God bestows is given by Him in the form of His guidance, His Spirit, and His leadings and promptings. We read in [If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. ( James 1:5 (NIV) ] that God bestows wisdom on those who ask Him. Therefore, a couple should pray for God to give them the wisdom they need to have a better relationship, communication, and conduct. A husband and wife need to ask God for wisdom not only in big matters but also in small things such as making daily choices and decisions.

• Faith

Faith is essential to marriage. A husband and his wife have to live in faith. They both have to believe that God is with them and that He has plans for them and their marriage. They must have faith in God, Who holds their relationship together. When a couple has faith in God, they can weather any storm or problem that comes into their marriage or even their personal lives. Faith in God will keep their eyes focused on what God will do and what God can do.

Couples should work out their faith; their faith should increase over the years. Couples need to pray for their faith to become stronger. Jesus himself imparted His wisdom in [“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” [ Mark 9:23 (NIV) ] that nothing is impossible for anyone who has faith. They should desire deeper faith and ask God for it as they live their lives on the path toward righteousness. A husband and a wife need to pray for unwavering faith no matter what the evil one throws at them.

• Courage

A number of things may cause a husband, a wife, or both to be fearful. A husband or wife may be fearful about losing his or her job. The fear of danger or harm may present itself to a couple. There might even be a fear of separation from the spouse. A couple should not be shaken by the fearful schemes of Satan because, as we learn in [ The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. [ John 10:10 (NIV) ], Jesus has come to give a full life.

Husbands and wives should not fix their eyes on what causes them to fear. Instead, they should pray and remember the miracles that God and Jesus have done in the past. The Bible reminds us in 1 Chronicles 28:20 (NIV) how David told his son Solomon to be brave because God is with him. A husband and his wife should ask God for courage as they face their fears. A couple needs to pray for steadfastness and hold on to God’s promises.
