Can a Woman Lead Her Husband in Prayer?

The ideal standard of God for marriages and families is that the husbands are the head of the wives as Christ is the head of the Church (see Ephesians 5:23 and 1 Corinthians 11:3). Regardless of whether the husband is a Christian or not, the wives are called to submit to their husbands because such is the will of God. So, what about spiritual matters such as prayers and biblical knowledge? Is it okay if the woman leads her husband spiritually?

If a woman leads her husband in prayer when the husband isn’t a Christian, is not spiritually knowledgeable/equipped, or doesn’t take his role yet to lead his wife to Christ, she may do so without feeling guilty and condemning toward her husband. We know that the Spirit Who raised Christ Jesus from the dead lives in those who have received the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ, regardless of gender. Both men and women in Christ have the same Holy Spirit, united in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:28 says There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

What the Bible wants to tell us when it comes to spiritual things and the Kingdom of God is that we are all one in Christ, and our differences in gender, age, nationality, and race don’t matter. Christ is all that matters in our spiritual walk with God. After all, Christ is the head of the Church, not man or woman. If someone is spiritually unequipped, let the spiritually mature teach and equip them regardless of gender, age, and race. The Holy Spirit enables those God calls to do His works, teach the Word of God, share the Gospel, and make disciples in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

As a wife, if you are more spiritually mature than your husband, you may gently lead him in prayers and even in teaching him God’s Word as he permits it. You can lead him in this matter and still walk in submission and honor towards your husband as the head of the home, most especially when it comes to decision-making. God can use you powerfully as an instrument to impart heavenly wisdom and spiritual knowledge to your husband as you lead him in prayer and even in other spiritual matters.

Suppose you and your husband are both spiritually matured and equipped. Can you lead your husband in prayer? If your husband says so, that’s okay. You may lead him in prayer if he tells you to. It is ideal when your husband spiritually leads you and your family to Christ Jesus. That would be the dream of every Christian woman who knows their role as a wife and mother of the home—to have a godly man of God leading them and their children to Christ.

Will God accept if a woman leads her husband in prayer?

Our spiritual growth, knowledge, and journey with God are not on the same level. Some are new in their faith walk, while some are more spiritually mature and knowledgeable in certain things in the Kingdom of God, regardless of age, gender, and race.

Regardless of gender, age or race, God accepts the prayer of those who come to Him sincerely by their faith in Jesus Christ. If you are married to a husband who is not spiritually equipped, new in the faith walk, or not walking yet according to his new nature in Christ, and you are leading him in prayer, God will accept that prayer. As mentioned earlier, Galatians 3:28 says that we are one in Christ Jesus, and whatever differences we have from each other, it doesn’t matter.

So, you may continue to lead your husband in prayer and help him in his faith walk with God until you see him mature. And soon, it’s even better when he surpasses your knowledge and understanding of spiritual things and the Word of God so that he may walk according to his purpose and lead your family closer to Christ Jesus.

How can I encourage my husband to lead the family in prayer?

It can be challenging for a Christian family, especially the wife if the husband isn’t spiritually mature. However, with the help of the Holy Spirit, godly support, pastors, and church leaders, you will soon see your husband walk according to his identity and authority in Christ Jesus.

To encourage your husband to lead the family in prayer, you may want to let him hear preachings and sermons that empower his identity as a man of God, a husband, and a father of your home. People are usually encouraged when they hear about who they are in Christ, and when they are built up, they start walking according to their purpose and true nature in Christ Jesus.

Otherwise, it won’t help to force your husband to have high expectations or show disappointment over his actions when he isn’t ready to lead the family spiritually. You must be patient with him and continuously lift him in your prayers.

Moreover, you can ask for help from your godly male friends and couples that can help your husband in his personal walk with the Lord. A godly community surrounding your husband can greatly influence his walk with the Lord. He may need someone to be a role model, a mentor, and a discipler that will bring out his potential as a man of God. God made us a body of Christ so that we can help each other and watch each other’s back in our walk with God.

Know that the Lord knows the desires of your heart. He is pleased with how you want to see your husband walk in his true nature in Christ. As you continuously pray for your husband, heaven has already started moving in your favor.

May God bless you and empower you, and may you see your prayers for your husband fulfilled in Jesus’ name.
