God created men and women to be there for each other. He designed a man to be in need of help from a woman.

• Pray for unity

Pray that your husband will commit himself to communicating with you regularly. Ask God for you and your husband to unite in communicating well with each other.

• Ask God for willingness

Willingness to communicate is essential for a marital relationship to work. You and your husband may have differences, but those should not be hindrances to communicating well.

Jonathan was willing to do anything for David [ 1 Samuel 20:4 (NIV) – Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee. ]. Paul communicated by writing a letter so the believers would understand his message [ 2 Corinthians 1:13 (NIV) – For we write none other things unto you, that what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end; ]. Pray that you may be able to express your thoughts to your husband gently. Ask God to help you write a short letter that will bring forth your message to your husband, such that he will understand it and make a necessary response.

• Pray for an agreed schedule

Communication is important in having a blissful marriage, but so is time. You and your husband may become busy at work or with other matters that keep you from spending time together having good conversations.

Isaiah was prepared and available [ Isaiah 6:8 (NIV) – Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. ]. Pray that God will make a way for you and your husband to be available and have a regular schedule to have a heart-to-heart talk, share your opinions and plans, and talk about anything that concerns you and your marriage.

• Beseech God for honesty

It can be easy to hide how you feel as a married couple. You may be tempted not to speak what is in your heart. You may let fear hinder your tongue.

Peter taught the believers not to speak with deception [ 1 Peter 3:10 (NIV) – For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: ]. Pray for God to cover your marriage with honesty. Ask God for you and your husband to be truthful with each other. Petition God to protect you from lies and falsehoods. The Bible teaches us to listen to each other [ James 1:19 (NIV) Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: ]. Pray to God that there will not be interruptions or hindrances to your communication with your husband. Pray that you will both listen intently and be aware of each other’s body language.

• Pray for respect

You and your husband are unique individuals, but you are united by God in marriage. When you and your husband have differing opinions, do not judge. 

Found in the Bible, Peter instructed everyone to respect one another [ 1 Peter 2:17 (NIV) – Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. ]. Pray to God for you both to respect each other. When your minds do not come together to agree on a certain matter, you should still respect each other. Part of respect is for you to agree to disagree.0

Your husband may have friends that are not the same as yours, and the same is true for you. You may have different preferences, but God brought you together as one.

Social media is a great tool to encourage and strengthen communication in relationships. Add your husband to your social media platforms. Pray that through social media, you and your husband can become closer and communicate better by sending messages to each other, inspiring and encouraging each other.

• Speak negative feelings kindly

Disagreements may happen when you communicate with your husband. You may both feel hurt after exchanging careless or hurtful words, but conversations do not have to end in disagreements.

Paul taught the Christians to cast aside negative feelings and let kindness be present [ Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV) ]. Pray that you will be kind to each other in your speech and nonverbal ways. Ask God to help you and your husband speak kindly to each other. Pray that gentleness will be one of the key elements in your communication.
